Japan

Motorway signage in Japan is green. This the colour for tolled routes and therefore also in use on single lane non-motorways that are tolled. All other routes are signposted blue. However, this blue colour will not appear on the motorway signs. One striking feature of Japanese green signage is the lack of a border on the outside edges of the sign. As the number of exits on Japanese intercity motorways is relatively low, there is enough space to signpost exists. The first approach sign tends to come at 2 kilometers. It features the name of the exit only and is then followed by two further advanced directional signage that show all the exit destinations. After the exit, distances to the next two exits and the control city are displayed.
