The RSRU Shield has been invented way back in 1996 by John Williams, even though it was Craig Harris who worked it out later on.
It is a virtual challenge competition, in which the Shield is at stake every time the holder plays an international match. The winner of that match takes, or retains, the Shield. The idea of the RSRU Shield is, in a way, similar to the Ranfurly Shield in New Zealand rugby. One crucial difference is that the Ranfurly Shield is only at stake when the holder plays at home, while the RSRU Shield is at stake during every international match.
The Shield is not at stake when the holder plays against a non-IRB member team, such as a club team, a provincial team, an U21-team or an invitational team (e.g. British and Irish Lions, Barbarians). In case of a draw, the original holder retains the Shield. The Shield was first awarded to the winners of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, South Africa.
